The knock on the window caused Hammersmith to jump up and bang his head on the bathtub edge. Flashes of light danced across his vision. He groaned and rubbed his sore skull, slowly waking up to the harsh daylight reflecting off the bathroom mirror through the crack in the door. The dark in the bathroom made it difficult to find the doorknob, but he still managed to peek out the frame. There he spotted her.

The woman from last night stared in through the screen and waved when she noticed him. He tried not to breathe a sigh of relief at the sight of her.

“Were you asleep in there?” she asked.

“Sleeping in a bathtub does wonders for your back, but I was just resting my eyes.” He coughed to cover his obvious lie. “It’s harder to sneak up on someone with their back to the wall or a bathtub. How did you find me?”

“I’m good at hiding . . . and that hound at the front desk will talk to anything in a skirt. I knew you’d track those two down, and I knew you would team up with them.”

“Were you the one sneaking around out here last night?”

“I’m not that fast. Hey, I need to show you something.”

“You never even gave me your name. Why are you so eager to trust me?”

The woman sighed and twisted a strand of her blonde wig around an index finger. “I’m Annette Kline, bounty hunter. You should always ask a lady for her name before speaking so casually to her, you know.”

“Ray Hammersmith,” he said. He nodded at his own name. He’d always liked it. “I figure if we’re going to work together, then we should know each other’s names.”

“How quaint. I want to show you something, so shake the sleep out. Have you heard about the scuffle at the library last night?”

He already knew where this was going. “Yes. The police were asking questions outside the motel last night. I was even at the station last night, and I would like to keep my distance from it.”

“Well, while you were playing around with other boys, I found your partner. Come with me.”

“What about the two bounties?”

“No time. We’ll pick them up after.”

Hammersmith barely stifled a laugh. “You’re still worried about them running?”

“I’m worried about what’s going on in this town. We walked into something bad, Ray. Once you see your partner, you will understand.”

“Alright. Meet me out front in the parking lot.”

Hammersmith stretched his hamstrings and found the boots he left by the tub. He splashed cold sink water on his face.

The last thing he wanted to do was leave Jason and Matthew alone, but Hammersmith couldn’t leave Roadbuster on his own. He couldn’t stand by and hope for the best. That tough hunter had taught him so much in such a short time of Hammersmith getting the job. Heading out with a pretty woman didn’t seem like such a bad move, either.

After making sure he was finally awake, Hammersmith left the motel room behind for the hallway.
